Lovely to be invited onto William Crawley’s Talkback show on BBC Radio today.
William has a PhD in philosophy, and was ordained too, and is an excellent presenter. The show was digging into the issues presented by the government’s announcement yesterday of the AI Action Plan.
What I’ve been concerned about is that this plan had a huge amount to say about optimism of getting AI involved in every area of public service, work and life… but said nothing about the wellbeing and health impacts that that will have, as research from the research organisation I work for, clearly shows.
As I argue in the book, we need a total rethink of the adoption of tech – and have done since forever. Through history we have seen that the social impacts of tech adoption have always been made subservient to the demands of capital… and the impacts on us, our experience of work and life, have been enormous.
This isn’t to say that the government’s Action Plan is all bad, it’s just that the social impacts have to be prioritised far more than they seem to be now.
