Emerging Heroes…

Lego have quite rightly jumped on the Emerging bandwagon, and released this great set of ‘Emerging Church Heroes’ figures.

  1. Mobsby has too much hair….

    here is their GB: http://club.lego.com/eng/default.asp
one reaction from my side of the pond: they are all white men. where is sue collins, maggie dawn or people whose skin pigmentation is not pink ?
globally, i often wonder if em church is not some sociological thread, a reprecussion of our following jesus moving from flatbread to chocolate (http://blogs.wsj.com/informedreader/2007/03/11/every-country-has-its-flatbread-phase/)
for me, em church is (primarily) for white men recovering from the church. a 12 step program, to rmix the most significant spiritual insights of the late 20th century:
    1. We admitted we were powerless over churchianity—that our lives had become unmanageable.
    2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. (that power is not Steve Jobs, Bono, NT Wright or even Jordon Cooper)
    3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. (or at least lend Brian McL our lives & money)
    4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. (online of course, via blog or delicious or flickr)
    5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. (so many wrongs, so little time)
    6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. (an un-install to end all un-installs)
    7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. (is that removal atonement? what type of atonement ? What would Hauerwas say ?)
    8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. (or at least tell a Goly Play story to them)
    9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. (up to & including considering loaning them or MacBook)
    10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. (via our cells phone & on PostSecret)
    11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. (using every pre-modern spiritual practice we can get our hands on)
    12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to the unchurched, de-churched & anyone suckling on a church salalry, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
I am not ashamed to say I am a recovering church-aholic – in em church, the cofffee is better & free trade.

  3. bob, that’s wonderful!

  4. Bob, you’ve got a book and an international ministry right there 😉

  5. Is it just me, or is Lego completely camp by default?
I didn’t know the emerging movement swung quite that way so much!

  6. That really made me laugh – not sure about the wig and the yellow shoes….. We need one for the Brewin you trickster :>)

  7. Found this while trying to find out when your book is coming to the states, so can help you out here…I’m amazed you had the time to do this with a new baby on the way. I do agree with the previous poster – are you sure these are boy Leggos?

  8. In post-colonial, post-Christendom context, we like to live in the tension…”boy”? “Girl”? In a consciousness where we’ve transitioned from skin to plastic, “camp” is the new “staid.” “YMCA” stands alongside “In Christ there is no male or female.” In fact, in our alt.worship gatherings, we have the two playing together, in a loop…
    Delightful, Kester. This is fun.

  9. Michele Russinger

Brilliant! Perfect image of Greg, you need to add his laptop in as well…and Si without a shirt, perfect rendition.
